About the Founder

Hi, I’m Dr. Maya Corneille — a school founder and educator, a psychology professor, disability justice scholar, writer, and community builder.

For more than two decades, I’ve been cultivating spaces of belonging and transformation — where research, creativity, and lived experience come together to shape new ways of learning, leading, and living.

I am the founder and director of The Nia School, a neurodiversity-affirming microschool and community ecosystem in metro Atlanta that centers the brilliance and needs of autistic youth who benefit from learning to use speech. typing, signing, and devices to communicate.

My work is guided by the principles of disability justice, neurodiversity affirmation, and collective care. I believe education should be liberatory — a space where every learner is seen, heard, and empowered to express their full humanity.

Across all my roles — as scholar, educator, parent, writer, and advocate — I strive to build systems that affirm every form of communication and honor the brilliance of neurodivergent and disabled people.

Through this work, I’ve helped schools, families, and organizations reimagine education through a lens of justice, compassion, and belonging .I’ve provided consultation, workshops, and program design for organizations such as:

  • Duke Center for Autism and Brain Research

  • VCU Autism Center for Excellence

  • Duke Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

  • Eastside Academic Studies

  • Center for Third World Organizing

  • The Beautiful Project

  • Fuse Corps

  • North Carolina A&T State University

  • Ferguson School

  • Hirsch Academy

  • Love John Paul

In addition to my work in education, I am a published scholar, creative writer, and documentary consultant. I have authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications on health and education equity and have secured over $5 million in grant funding to advance research and community-based projects focused on health and education equity.

My creative writing explores motherhood, Blackness, and liberation, and my work has appeared in several literary journals. I am also an alumna of some of the most competitive creative writing fellowships, including:

  • Voices of Our Nation Arts Foundation (VONA)

  • Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop

  • Hurston/Wright Foundation Writers Week

  • Roots, Wounds, Words

Whether through research or storytelling, my work aims to amplify voices that are too often silenced — and to help us imagine more just and connected futures.

I have been a tenured professor at North Carolina A&T State University and a visiting professor at Morehouse College, where I also served as the Associate Director of Experiential Education and Social Impact at the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership.

My academic career spans over 20 years of teaching at the college, middle, elementary,  and preschool levels. I hold a Ph.D. in Social Psychology and a Master’s degree in Child Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a Certificate in Education from Duke University. During graduate school, I trained at the VCU Autism Center for Education, focusing on inclusive and community-centered approaches to assessment.
